The Queen Who Wore Black
By Mary Lynn Bushong
1 What colour do you like best? Do you like bright colors or dark colors? Sometimes it is nice to have a mixture.
2 What kinds of clothes would a princess wear? Most princesses wear pretty dresses. Some might like to wear plainer clothes. When Queen Victoria was born, she was a princess. Her father was a brother to King George IV. When she was just a baby, her father died.
3 Victoria's mother did not like the king. She did not like his brother William IV, either. They did not get to see little Victoria very often.
4 Victoria had a governess who taught her. She did not go to school as most children did. Her governess taught her to read and write. She also learned to speak many languages.
5 The young princess did not have many friends. Her mother did not think it was important. Then, just after she turned 18, she became queen. It was a big change for her, but she did her best. Victoria was still lonely.
