A Real Boy

By Jody Williams
1     "Once upon a time there was a piece of wood." Do puppets talk? Can boys turn into mules? If you lie, will your nose grow? Yes, in The Adventures of Pinocchio.

2     Carlo Lorenzini was born on November 24, 1826. He was born in Florence, Italy. He grew up in a place called Colodi. He changed his name to Carlo Colodi. Carlo became a writer. He wrote The Adventures of Pinocchio.

3     In the book, Pinocchio was a puppet. He was a marionette. A marionette is a puppet with strings. Its arms and legs can move. Pinocchio had to learn to be kind. If he lied, his nose grew. It went back to normal when he told the truth. Bad things happened to him. In the end, he became a real boy.
