Ana Rosa's First Memorial Day
By Brenda B. Covert
Ana Rosa Ruiz looked at her mama's calendar. It hung on the wall next to the kitchen door. The month of May displayed a photo of the U.S. flag. It also showed that the last Monday in May was Memorial Day.
"Mam, is Memorial Day a holiday?" she asked softly.
Seora Ruiz looked up. She was rocking baby Diego to sleep. "S," she said. "Yes, it is a holiday. It is a patriotic holiday."
"Is it just for Americans, or can Latinos celebrate it, too?" Ana Rosa asked.
Seora Ruiz stood up slowly. Diego stirred in her arms. Then he settled down. "I will tell you when I return," she said. She slipped out of the room. Diego would take his nap in his crib.
Ana Rosa waited. She could hear cars drive by the front of the small house. Their headlights shot beams of light along the curtains. The neighbor's dog barked. A small spider scurried along the wall. Pap would be home soon. Mam came out of the baby's room.
"Will we celebrate Memorial Day?" Ana Rosa asked.
"We will find a way to celebrate it," Seora Ruiz replied. She smoothed Ana Rosa's long, dark hair. Then she went into the kitchen. The yellow walls made the small room seem bright and cheerful.
Ana Rosa followed her, asking more questions. She wondered how people celebrated a patriotic holiday. She wondered what she could do.
