1     The Department of Transportation is part of our executive branch. The head of the department has a special title. He or she is called the Secretary of Transportation. This person serves as a member of the president's cabinet. The secretary advises the president on all matters dealing with transportation in our country.
 
2     The Department of Transportation has a long history. Since our country's beginning, there has been a need for standard policies for all types of transportation. In the early years, some types of transportation got a lot of help from the government. Others got little help. The act which established the Department of Transportation passed 92 years after the first such legislation was introduced. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the act to create this department in 1966.
 
3     Today, the Department of Transportation's mission is to make sure that transportation is safe and fast. It also works to keep transportation efficient and environmentally .....
