Always the Same Thing

Eat Dessert First Day

Reading Comprehension for May 2

Emily sat at the lunch table in the school cafeteria. "It's Wednesday," she muttered as she pulled a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, juice box, and chips out of her lunchbox.

"It's been Wednesday all day. Why are you muttering about it?" asked her friend, Jan.

"Because I always have peanut butter and jelly on Wednesday," she said, resting her elbows on the table and setting her chin in her hands. "My mom is so predictable."

"Is that a bad thing?" asked Jan, taking a bite of her sandwich.

"I guess it's not a bad thing. But it is boring," said Emily sadly. "It's always the same thing. Nothing ever changes. Mom always keeps to the schedule."

Jan raised her eyebrows thoughtfully. "My mom doesn't use a schedule. I never know what I'm going to have for lunch or dinner. Mom is always trying something new. The other night, she made this tofu casserole thing." Jan scrunched up her face in disgust. "Sometimes it would be nice to know what to expect."

"I don't know if I would like tofu casserole," said Emily scrunching up her nose. "But it sure would be nice to have something different once in awhile."

Jan picked up her milk carton and took a sip. "So, what's for dinner then?"

"Spaghetti and meatballs," said Emily gloomily, "with garlic bread and salad. Then we'll have Jell-O for dessert. It's the same thing every Wednesday." She took a bite of her sandwich and chewed slowly.

"That sounds great!" said Jan. "It's been a long time since I've had spaghetti and meatballs."

Emily's face lit up. "That's right!" she said. "You're coming over after school and having dinner with us. I almost forgot."

"It sounds like it will be a great meal," said Jan, looking her sandwich over. "My mom is on a vegetarian kick right now. Look at this sandwich." She held the sandwich out for Emily to see. "It has vegetables, cheese, and sprouts on whole wheat bread with these seeds in it." Jan picked out one of the seeds from the bread and looked it over. "What I wouldn't give for a sandwich made with white bread." Jan sighed and took a bite of her sandwich.

Emily sighed in reply. "I guess we'll just have to eat what we have."

Later that day, the girls walked to Emily's house. As they entered the back door, Jan inhaled deeply. "What is that smell?"
