Ralph Dale Earnhardt was born on April 29, 1951. He was born in North Carolina. His father was a race car driver. Growing up, Dale Earnhardt liked racing. Dale's dad did not want him to be a race car driver. Dale said it was his dream to race.


Dale started racing when he was a teen. He needed money to enter races. He got a job. Dale worked on cars during the day. He earned enough money to keep racing. Dale's dad died in 1973. Dale wanted to race more than ever.
