Who wrote this fairy tale? A prince is looking for a princess. He meets many. None are right for him. One day, a young woman knocks on his door. She says that she is a princess. She was lost in the rain. The prince had to make sure she was a princess. He asked her to sleep on top of twenty mattresses. There was a pea underneath all of them. If she was a true princess, she would have trouble sleeping. She did. The prince married her. Hans Christian Andersen wrote this story in 1835.


Hans Christian Andersen was born on April 2, 1805. He was born in Denmark. Denmark is a country in Europe. He was a smart boy. He liked to pretend. When he was young, he made puppets. He made clothes for them. He built a stage. Hans put on puppet shows. Hans liked to read. He used his puppets to tell the story.


Hans' father died when he was 11 years old. He had to work to help earn money for his family. He worked for a weaver. He worked for a tailor. A tailor makes clothes. He also worked in a factory. Hans was made fun of. He had a high voice. Others teased him.
