Mary Pope was born on May, 20, 1949, in Oklahoma. Her father was in the army. Her family moved many times. While many people would have complained about moving so much, she enjoyed it. She said she loved her family and played with her siblings all the time. Mary had her two parents, her twin brother, a younger brother, and an older sister.


Together, this busy family had many adventures. In Austria at age four, Mary lived across from an ancient castle on a cliff. Her life in this place seemed part of a fairy tale. Then, when Mary was five and in Virginia, her family lived in an old fort. She felt like she was living history. As a teenager, Mary acted in the local theater where she felt she traveled to imaginary places.


As a college student, Mary studied drama and religion. After college, Mary traveled throughout Europe. She lived in a cave on Crete. Then she toured sixteen Asian countries.
