Muddy Waters

Muddy Waters

Reading Comprehension for April 4

It is hard to believe that Muddy Waters is the name of a real person. That wasn't always his name. He was born as McKinley Morganfield. McKinley entered this world on April 4, 1913. Then again, it might have been April 4, 1915. No one is quite sure what the real year was. He was born in a small area of Mississippi called Jug's Corner. It was near the Mississippi River.

How did McKinley end up with a name like Muddy Waters? That name came from his grandmother. McKinley's mother died when he was very young. His grandmother took him in and raised him. It seems that McKinley loved to play in mud puddles. His grandmother would laugh and say he was just part of the muddy waters. The name stuck.

Muddy and his grandmother moved to Clarksdale, Mississippi, when he was three years old. Even as a small child Muddy loved music. He bought his first guitar as a teenager. He sang with a group called Son Sims Four and learned to play the guitar from other band members.
