The New Ocean

Did you know there's a new ocean? The Southern Ocean is the fifth ocean of the world. It was not always thought of as a separate ocean. In the spring of 2000, officials decided to name the Southern Ocean as a distinct ocean. The Southern Ocean surrounds the continent of Antarctica. For this reason, it is also called the Antarctic Ocean.


Oceans of the world cover about 71% of the Earth's surface. The five oceans of the world are the Atlantic Ocean, the Arctic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, and the Southern Ocean.


The Pacific Ocean is the largest. The Atlantic Ocean is second. The Indian Ocean is third in size. The Southern Ocean is the fourth. The Arctic Ocean is the smallest.
