The Sinking of the Titanic

In the early 1900s, traveling was more difficult than it is today. Cars were very new, and only the wealthy had them. The airplane had just been invented and wasn't ready for passengers. Most people traveled by horse, buggy, and train. Traveling long distances took much longer than it does today.

Traveling across the ocean required a ship. A trip from New York to England took many days. Some ship companies built very fancy ships to carry passengers. One of the most famous ship companies at that time was the White Star Line. It built many big ships. One of its biggest and grandest ships was the Titanic.

Construction of the Titanic began in 1909. It was meant to be the largest and safest ship on the water. The luxurious ship had several restaurants, a gymnasium, beautiful ballrooms, and many grand staterooms for travelers to sleep in.
