Madeline was written by Ludwig Bemelmans. He was born in Austria. He was born on April 27, 1898. His father was a painter. Ludwig was a troublemaker when he was young. His parents sent him to work with his uncle. His uncle owned resort hotels. Ludwig was a waiter. That did not work out. He got into trouble. His family told him that he had a choice. He could go to reform school. A reform school is a place for children who have trouble following rules. Or he could move to America. Ludwig chose to move.


Ludwig moved to New York in 1914. He became a waiter. Ludwig then decided to join the army. After World War I was over, Ludwig went back to New York. He worked in hotels. He worked in restaurants. Ludwig took art lessons.
