The Wonder Tunnel

Cars travel through tunnels. Trains travel through tunnels. People travel through tunnels. Tunnels can be above the ground. They can be under the ground. A famous tunnel is underground. It is also under the sea.

As early as 1802, there was an idea for an underground tunnel. The tunnel would connect land. It would begin in England. It would end in France. England and France are countries in Europe. There is water between them. It is called the English Channel. The idea was for people to travel by horse and carriage. The road would be lit by oil lamps. There would be an island. The island would be used as a stop. People and horses could get air. Over the years, there were other ideas.

In 1957, new planning began. The plan was to build two main tunnels. There would be a smaller third tunnel. It would be used to make repairs to the other tunnels when needed. The tunnel would be under the sea floor.
