She was lost in the rain. The prince had to make sure she was a princess. He asked her to sleep on top of twenty mattresses. There was a pea underneath all of them. If she was a true princess, she would have trouble sleeping. She did. The prince married her. Hans Christian Andersen wrote this story in 1835. 2 Hans Christian Andersen was born on April 2, 1805. He was born in Denmark. Denmark is a country in Europe. He was a smart boy. He liked to pretend. When he was young, he made puppets. He made clothes for them. He built a stage. Hans put on puppet shows. Hans liked to read. He used his puppets to tell the story. 3 Hans' father died when he was 11 years old. He had to work to help earn money for his family. He worked for a weaver. He worked for a tailor. A tailor makes clothes. He also worked in a factory. Hans was made fun of. He had a high voice. Others teased him.
