Margaret Peterson Haddix: Only In My Dreams

By Jody Williams
1     What do you want to be when you grow up? That is a question that almost every child is asked at some point during his or her growing-up years. The answer for many children is whatever a parent's career choice is. Others go out on a limb and say things like a spy or a professional dirt-biker. It is rare that the answer is "I want to be an author." Margaret Peterson Haddix wanted to be something that she believed real people did not actually get to do. She dreamed of being an author. Today she is living her dream.

2     Margaret Peterson Haddix was born on April 9, 1964. She was born in Ohio. She is the second of four children. Her mother was a nurse. Her father was a farmer. Margaret grew up on her family's farm where her dad raised corn, soybeans, wheat, hogs, and cattle. Margaret remembers her family's love of reading. Her memories include family vacations where her parents would beg the kids to put down their books long enough to see something like the Grand Canyon. Margaret shares that she found herself saying the same thing to her own children and wonders if it is just in the genes.

3     Margaret attended high school in a small town. She was involved in band, sang in the choir, and acted in plays. She worked on her school newspaper and ran track. She also had time for volunteer work.
