Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road?

By Beth Beutler
"Why did the chicken cross the road?" Marty playfully asked his younger sister, Carly.

Carly rolled her eyes. Marty was always telling jokes. "Why?"

"Because he was too chicken to stay where he was." Marty laughed heartily.

Carly smiled. Although the joke (in her opinion) wasn't that funny, Marty was. He enjoyed life. He was always telling jokes. The family thought that someday he might just become a professional comedian.

Marty would have his first chance to perform publicly when the school held its annual talent show. He had been practicing jokes and writing a monologue for about a month now. The show was coming up this week on Friday night.

Carly was glad she was not in the talent show. She was very afraid of getting up in front of people. She preferred staying in the background. She had submitted a painting to the art show that was also being held at the same time.

"Can I practice my monologue on you, Carly?" Marty asked.

"Sure. How about after I finish this math homework?"
