1 Joel's grandfather had a very interesting job. For his entire life, Joel's grandfather was a soldier. He was a soldier in the army and got to work in many places all over the world. Joel's grandfather's house is an interesting place. He has pictures of people from all over the world. He has many interesting stories to tell.
2 Joel likes to hear his grandfather's stories. He likes to hear about all the places his grandfather has been. He likes to hear about all the tanks he has ridden in. He likes to hear about the planes he has jumped from. He likes to hear how exciting being a soldier can be. There is one story, though, that Joel doesn't like to hear.
3 Joel's grandfather served in a war in Vietnam. While he was fighting there, the enemy captured him. They kept him prisoner for almost a year. Joel's grandfather said it was a terrible time. He wasn't given much to eat. He wasn't allowed to sleep very long at a time. On some days, he was beaten and tortured. He tried many times to escape but failed each time. He wasn't allowed to communicate with the outside world. It was a very lonely, painful, and desperate time.
