Multi-talented Maya Angelou

By Beth A. Beutler
"Who is Maya Angelou?" Stephanie wondered as she tapped the eraser end of her pencil against her chin.

Her teacher, Mrs. Paulson, was about to give another one of her "Top Ten Facts" lists to her class. Stephanie always found these interesting since she almost always learned something new.

"Got your pencils and pens ready?" Mrs. Paulson asked.

Stephanie stopped tapping and poised her pencil to write. Mrs. Paulson usually did these lists quickly, and there would be a quiz the next day. Stephanie tried to focus. Sometimes that was difficult because she was a creative child and often had a lot of ideas running through her head.

     "All right, class, let's begin!"

     Mrs. Paulson read her list:

Top Ten Facts about Maya Angelou

     1. Maya Angelou accomplished many things. She was a best-selling author, poet, and civil-rights activist.

     2. She was born on April 4, 1928, in Saint Louis, Missouri. She died on May 28, 2014.
