Is there a doctor in the house? Usually when that is said, a person is sick or hurt. In the 1970s and 1980s, basketball fans asked that during games. They were talking about a special player.


On February 22, 1950, Julius Winfield Erving II was born. Julius was born in New York. He was one of three children. His mother raised the children by herself. Life was hard for the family. Julius's mother always made sure that her children knew that they were loved. She told them they were great. She told them they would do great things. Julius believed her.


Julius played on a basketball team when he was 10 years old. He scored 11 points a game. When he was 13 years old, his mom got married. The family moved. Julius went to a new school. He was a very good student. He played basketball. In high school, a friend started calling him the "doctor." The name stuck.
