Dreaming up Stories

Max is in third grade. He is good at sports. He plays the piano. He is a good student. He likes math, and he writes great stories. His stories are better than some of the books in the library. Max usually sits at his desk and stares. It looks like he is in a faraway land. He thinks a lot. Sometimes he gets in trouble for not paying attention. He tells his friends that he is dreaming up his next story.


David Adler may be able to relate to Max. He is a well-known author. When he was in school, he was a dreamer. He often got in trouble for it. He says that dreaming makes him a better writer.


David A. Adler was born on April 10, 1947. He was born in New York. His father was a teacher. His mother was a social worker. He is the second child of six. His parents encouraged their children to be individuals. David was known as the family artist. He created many paintings and drawings. They still hang in his parents' house.


David also enjoyed writing when he was young. He made up stories to entertain his family. David often dreamed of the stories he would write. The house that David grew up in was very large. The top floor was used for storage. David would spend time there. He crawled between the boxes and suitcases. He created stories.
