Friedrich Froebel: The Man Who Started Kindergarten

You may never have heard about Friedrich Froebel. However, you probably have heard of what he did. He created kindergarten.


Froebel was born on April 21, 1782. He was born in the country we now call Germany, but at that time it was known as Prussia. His childhood was not a happy one. He had very little schooling. He read a lot. He also observed nature. He trained as a forester. He was able to take some classes at the University of Jena.


In 1801, Froebel went back home to help his sick father. His father died the next year. Friedrich's training came in handy when he became a clerk in the department of forestry. He took a job as a private secretary in 1804.
