No More Housework

No Housework Day

Reading Comprehension for April 7

Angela grumbled under her breath as she pushed the broom across the floor. The snow was finally gone, and she wanted to play outside. The more she grumbled and complained to herself, the longer the job seemed to take.

After what seemed like forever, she finally swept the small pile of dirt into the dust pan. Mom was working in the kitchen when Angela went out to dump the dirt into the garbage and put the things away. Mom saw the scowl on Angela's face.

"Your face is going to freeze like that someday if you hold it that way long enough," said Mom.

"Mom!" Angela whined. "May I please go outside and play now? I finished sweeping."

"I'm glad. I was getting tired of hearing the complaining. Yes, you may go outside and play. By the way, did you know that tomorrow is No Housework Day?" asked Mom.

"That's great. Does that mean there will be no housework for me?" asked Angela hopefully.

Mom nodded, and Angela skipped out of the house with a smile on her face. Tomorrow was sure to be a great day, she thought.

The next morning when Angela got up to get ready for school, she did not make her bed. She did not fold up her pajamas and put them away. It was fun not having to do housework.

The first thing that wasn't so much fun was that she had to make her own lunch. For some reason, Mom wasn't making it - or breakfast either. Angela did not think about it much. She was running late and needed to go to school.
