Stained Glass Day

Reading Comprehension for April 18

Have you ever seen a stained glass window? Many churches have them. It is thought that the first stained glass windows appeared in France during the ninth century. Stained glass windows usually portrayed a religious scene that reminded the church-goers of a Bible story or historical event.

A stained glass artisan uses glass of different colors and shapes to piece together a picture. He or she "paints" a picture or design by arranging and carefully attaching the glass together. Some windows are very large; some fill in smaller areas. No matter what the size, when the sun shines through the glass, a gorgeous, bright portrayal of the scene comes alive. Often, beautiful shades of color also appear on the nearby floor as the sunbeams shine through the glass.

All stained glass windows are a work of art, and so are you! Each person is made individually and has many talents and abilities. Each of us has a unique way of bringing brightness to our world. We are like the pieces of the stained glass window. We may have different shapes, sizes, and colors, but when we work together, we form a beautiful picture!
