The Smallest One

1     "In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines lived twelve little girls in two straight lines...The smallest one was Madeline." Madeline is a story about a little girl. She lived in Paris, France. France is a country in Europe. The story was written many years ago.
 
2     Madeline was written by Ludwig Bemelmans. He was born in Austria. He was born on April 27, 1898. His father was a painter. Ludwig was a troublemaker when he was young. His parents sent him to work with his uncle. His uncle owned resort hotels. Ludwig was a waiter. That did not work out. He got into trouble. His family told him that he had a choice. He could go to reform school. A reform school is a place for children who have trouble following rules. Or he could move to America. Ludwig chose to move.
 
3     Ludwig moved to New York in 1914. He became a waiter. Ludwig then decided to join the army. After World War I was over, Ludwig went back to New York. He worked in hotels. He worked in restaurants. Ludwig took art lessons.
