Painting for Sale
By Beth Beutler
I love our little town. We have lived here my entire life. Dad has to drive to a train station and then catch a train to go to work in the city during the week. It takes him about 45 minutes to get to work or home. However, he says that living in a small, quiet town is worth it.
My mom works part time at a small general store in town. Mr. and Mrs. Hooper opened that store more than 40 years ago. They carry all sorts of items. It's such a fun place to shop! Plus, Mom gets an employee discount, so anything we buy there is a little less expensive than it normally would be.
The school I go to is about two blocks from Hooper's General Store. So normally, unless I have soccer practice, I walk to the store after school. Mom works until four, so I hang out there while she finishes work.
On Wednesday, I followed my normal routine and walked to the store. I went through the door -- I love hearing the jingling of the bells as the doors open and close. Mom was over by the shelves with linens on them.
"Hi, Mom," I said, giving her a quick hug.
"How was school today?" Mom asked.
I walked to the counter and put my backpack behind it. Then I turned and said, "It was pretty interesting today. I love art class."
"I know you do, honey. You are very good at art."
"We've been doing some painting. The teacher says I should frame my painting of the river near our house."
