Our Assets are Frozen!
By Beth Beutler 1 I've learned a lot about cooking since Mom got her new job. She started this job a few months ago, and she has to travel several times a month. She enjoys the traveling because she sees many parts of the country. However, she misses us. She finds it harder to keep up with managing our home, so she has taught me to take responsibility for more of the cooking. I don't mind. After all, I'm almost 14, and in a few years I will be able to get my own place if I want. I'll have to know how to cook! 2 Mom has never been fond of using pre-made store bought food. Oh, she likes the convenience of just popping something into the microwave. However, we are careful to read labels, and we've discovered that many of those foods are high in salt and fat. They also don't taste as good as homemade meals! 3 So, we began to do some research. We've had a small upright freezer in the mud room for some time. My grandparents used to own it, and when my grandpa passed away a few years ago, Grandma didn't feel the need to keep it. So, we have it up on a counter. We'd place some extra food in there sometimes, but we never really used it much. Once Mom got her job, we thought, "Maybe we can freeze our own meals."
