Why do people shop at Wal-Mart? Some people shop for food. Some shop for toys. Some shop for clothes. Others shop for items for the home. In fact, Wal-Mart is called a one-stop shopping center.


Wal-Mart was founded by Sam Walton. He was born on March 29, 1918, in Oklahoma. The Walton family lived on a farm. Sam's dad could not make enough money for his family. They had to move. They moved to Missouri.


Sam became involved in scouting. He became the youngest Eagle Scout in the state's history. Sam was a good basketball player. He played football. He was the quarterback. Sam was also the president of his class. He was an honor student.


Sam had to work when he was young. His family needed money. He milked the family cow. Then, he sold the extra milk. He delivered newspapers. Sam worked while in college. He was a waiter. He did not get paid money. He was paid in food. That is how Sam Walton ate while in college.


Sam Walton graduated from the University of Missouri. He started working for J.C. Penney. He was paid $75.00 a month. World War II was about to begin. He started working at a factory. War supplies were made there. Then Sam met his future wife. Her name was Helen Robson. They were married on Valentine's Day in 1943.
